Key West

The Florida Keys are unbelievably beautiful. I had no idea (other than Hawaii) that the United States had such beautiful coastline with white sand beaches and turquoise water. The Keys are made of the exposed portions of an ancient coral reef. There are about 1,700 islands, but over 30% of the population lives on Key West - the southernmost point in the continental U.S. -- and, I don't blame them … it's gorgeous, laid back and friendly.
I brought along my friend and fellow Playmate Patrice Hollis with me for the trip. She met me in Miami and we went on a road trip in a convertible VW Bug all the way to Key West. We loaded up on snack food, sang our heart out to fun music that we knew all the words to and gawked at the tropical beauty all around us.
We stopped on the Island of Marathon for a helicopter tour of the Keys. From up above we got a birds eye view of all the islands that make up the Keys as well as sea life, especially rays and dolphins. The helicopter actually set down at a restaurant called the Island Fish Company that is famous for its Key Lime Pie … You can't take a trip to the Keys and not have Key Lime Pie!!! We had regular Key Lime Pie, deep-fried Key Lime Pie, a Key Lime Martini and a Key Lime Colada!!! We definitely had our share of Key Lime!!!
About half way to Key West we stopped at Isla Morada. The beach there is spectacular!! The water is beautiful and warm. Here I learned paddle boarding with instructor Girard Middleton. Paddle boarding is a lot of work but once you get the hang of it, it can be very therapeutic and zen-like. At least on a fairly calm day like I had. It is definitely a work out!!!
While in Key West I got to explore the haunted and creepy side of this gorgeous seaside community. A tour guide named Brant gave me a tour of the East Martello Museum. He told me the creepy story of the affair of Count Carl von Cosel and Elena Hoyos Mesa. The Count was a doctor that cared for Elena while she was dying of TB. He fell in love with her and claimed she spoke to him from beyond the grave. This led the Count to dig up her grave and bring her home where he preserved her and lived with her for 7 years until he was caught. Brant also showed me Robert the Doll and told me the story of Gene whom the doll was made for. Robert is very particular about getting his picture taken and if you don't ask permission from him first he will curse you with bad luck. There are tons of letters hanging around of people asking for Robert's forgiveness.
Lloyd's Tropical Bike Tour is a really fun way to see Key West. The tour takes you along the cute little residential streets, through the art deco buildings and down to the beach and to the southernmost tip of the U.S. The closest point you can get to Cuba! We watched the sun go down and shared some sweet, fresh coconut water.

We are headed to KW 6/2 ~ it won't get here soon enough....but I was wondering, do you have any restaurant recommendations? We have several adventures lined up.....my 20 year old DD LOVES mystery/horror/adventure (similar to you) an she has her on list of "must do" things! lol Thanks for the great blogs!
Take the haunted Graveyard Tour. All the bodies are in tombs or smaller gravesites...and they are all buried above ground because of possible flood waters, etc. It's creepy and FUN!!!
Mallory Square is kind of a "freak show" though it is fun.
My sister has a Tour business down here in So. FL so I got to go to Key West a few months ago for no charge. I was an experience that I couldn't pass up. It was a Four hour plus bus ride from where I reside. It was a real "Trip" ~ (In more ways then one ~lol) It was very exciting & I really enjoyed it. I hope to go back there again sometime. I am glad that u enjoyed it too Bridge! ~ Marty ~ ProgrYESsive

Too funny...using creepy and gorgeous in the same sentence. I've been to Key West but I didn't know about the iconic Count Carl and Robert the Doll...great!:) Which of the other Keys would you recommend the most for simple fun and sun amid leisurely elegance? It sounds like Isla Morada! Could you please recommend a couple of resorts to relax at? Thank you!!
I'VE HEARD SOME BAD THINGS ABOUT KEY WEST...
I KNOW U PROBABLY WENT TO THE HIGHTLIGHT PLACES BUT DID U SEE ANYTHING MAYBE ( HOW DO I PHRASE THIS ) BAD OR ANYTHING THAT MADE U FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE? WOULD U RECOMEND IT AS A VACATION FOR A FAMILY?
I have been to the Keys probably 4 or 5 times. I just love them. So relaxed! islamorada is beautiful!! Key West is fun Duval street has a bunch of bars and shopping. Mallory Square is great for the sunsets. I've been with my sister, my friends and my husband. Everyone enjoyed it!
As a resident of the Keys its defiantly living in a paradise! I hope that you made it to Sandspur beach on the Bahia Honda State Park. It is my favorite and feel that it is the best beach in the Keys. Long, white soft sangy beaches, where you can walk out on low tide and see some amazing stuff. Also I hope you made it to Big Pine Key where I live- the wildlife is amazing with wild Key Deer roaming around and the best pizza down the street at the No Name Key Pub. The Keys are beautiful, but the best way to experience it is on a boat, with friends, fishing diving and relaxing with a few beers. Downtown is always fun on Duval- but the best bars are def the smaller, local ones off the map- Capt. Tony's, and Cowboy Bills. Come back in October for Fantasy Fest and Im sure you will have a blast. Love ya, and hope you make it back down!
i love that you get to go all around the world and see the attractions there! u r so awesome!

Hi Bridget, You are soo cool! We have plans for Fantasy Fest again (this will be our 6th year) and I see that you are the Grand Marshall - congratulations!! That is soo wonderful! We look forward to hopefully seeing you around town that week. Have fun : ) safe travels! Kim
What a beautiful place, in its small dimensions, Key West is one of my preferred vacation destination. I find difficult to believe somebody in Florida Keys and Key West could be disappointed. Busy place if you like so or move to the quiet palm lined streets and numerous beaches.
